Four Hundred and Fifty Photographs of the Mother with Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya

Dear Friends,

Born in Berhampur, West Bengal, Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya (18 October 1923—8 January 2010) was the eldest son of Dakshinapada Bhattacharya and Prafullamoyee Devi. After passing his matriculation examination in 1939 from Jagadbandhu Institution of Kolkata, he was enrolled in Bachelor of Arts at the Krishnanath College (Behrampur) under the Calcutta University from where he graduated in 1945. From an early age, he was interested in sports and physical education. At the age of seven, he had his first lesson in Boxing in Bhowanipore Y.M.C.A. at Kolkata. He practised Boxing under Jagat Kanta Seal who was a famous boxer but his real physical education commenced when he joined The Ballygunje School of Physical Culture where he received training from Biren Chunder (Jagat Kanta Seal’s assistant who would join Sri Aurobindo Ashram in June 1945). In 1940, he established his own physical culture club ‘Vivekananda Byayam Samiti’ with the objective of building up the younger generation ‘for a higher life.’ He visited Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry, in April 1942 for the first time to have the Darshan of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother and stayed there for four months during which he worked in the Ashram Laundry. The Mother had noticed him and his companions (Sunil, Ranju and Gora) who had accompanied him and remarked to Nolini Kanta Gupta: “I like them.” In 1945 when he was on the verge of taking a state scholarship to study silk technology in England, he received an inner command to settle in Pondicherry. He settled in the Ashram in May 1945 and took up work in the Ashram Laundry. He was instrumental in organizing the Department of Physical Education of which he was its Director. He also served the Mother till Her last days and shared a unique bond with Her. He was lovingly addressed in the Ashram as ‘Dada’ meaning elder brother in Bengali.

18 October 2023 marks the Birth Centenary of Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya. As our loving homage to him, four hundred and fifty photographs of Pranab Kumar with the Mother taken on various occasions have been published in the website of Overman Foundation.

13 Replies to “Four Hundred and Fifty Photographs of the Mother with Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya

  1. Two messages written by the Mother for Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya (translated from French):

    • ‘To Pranab
Never forget that you are not alone. The Divine is with you helping and guiding you. He is the companion who never fails, the friend whose love comforts and strengthens.’

    • ‘To my dearest child, to my friend who is so close, with all my love’.

  2. After Sri Aurobindo left His body the Mother wrote to Pranab on a piece of paper in French:
‘I want to tell you to what point you are what Sri Aurobindo asked you to be when He left His body—the material support of my body, the energy that enables it to face all the ordeals after this sudden and irreparable collapse of that feeling of total and absolute security that gave me thirty years of unmixed happiness.’

  3. Two interesting vignettes to show how concerned the Mother was for Her dear child, Pranab:

On 26 July 1952, the Mother sent a chit to Pranab through Amrita in which She had written:
‘Mon aimé [my loved one], there is a very violent and dangerous attack upon you. For my sake and the sake of the work, be very careful and take great care of yourself.
    My love never leaves you.’

One day, at half past five in the morning, the Mother told Pranab: “In your whole family, your mother, father, brothers, in all I see a special sign of Sri Aurobindo’s divine stamp. That is why I have made all of you an integral part of me. If the need arises I could integrate your whole town. You have taken a new birth in me.”

Saying so, the Mother wrote the following on a piece of paper:

‘There is no limit to your miracles, now you have reincarnated in me the perfected spirit of your family.’

  4. The Mother’s Birthday Messages to Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya:

  5. One night we had an exceptional fortune, and a privilege, that Dada had accepted our invitation for the dinner at our home near the Ashram Sportsground. When Suniti my wife told it to Dyuman-bhai about it he at once instructed her: “Pranab is a heavy eater and you must cook a lot of food. He is particularly fond of karela (bitter gourd) vegetable.” Luckily at that time we had plenty of them in our garden, and we were doubly happy. It was a Maharashtrian type of preparation. He had informed the group with whom he normally took dinner in the Mother’s Room. And he came on his heavy bike and was with us for more than two hours. The feeling was the Mother herself had come for the occasion and blessed us. What else can one say? In fact not necessary to say anything more.

  6. A most memorable and fitting tribute !
A life of dedicated service at the feet of the Mother!
