Two pencil sketches of Sri Aurobindo made by Mukul Chandra Dey

Dear Friends,

Today we are publishing two pencil sketches of Sri Aurobindo made by Mukul Chandra Dey in April 1919. We have also published a portion of the first sketch where Sri Aurobindo’s signature in English and Bengali could be seen.

Mukul Chandra Dey had made three pencil sketches of Sri Aurobindo which were later purchased from him by the late Prithwi Singh Nahar (1898-1976) of Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry.

With warm regards,

  1. This is superb. I’m having the replica of the first but face towards the right than left. Sri Aurobinod’s signature has date as April 21, 1919.

  2. A perfect portrait. The profile is superb. The upward gaze into Eternity ! Fine flowing dark hair ! The ear of harmonious contours that heard divine melodies ! And a sivery wrapping cloth round the neck and shoulders ! It is a dream face I have framed in my heart. Thank u dear Anurag for bringing these priceless treasures to our eyes. There is indeed an etherial quality the artist has captured n conveyed through his pencil lines. The sketch though ancient breathes freshness ! An utterly subtle beauty shines through as Divine Glory peeping through a Veil !

  3. You are not only an Aurobindonian wizard but also Aurobindonian “archeologist” – excavating new treasures!

I am reminded of Master’s words: “If Art’s service is but to imitate Nature, then burn all the picture galleries and let us have instead photographic studios. It is because Art reveals what Nature hides , that a small picture is worth more than all the jewels of the millionaires and the treasures of the princes.” (Thoughts and Aphorisms)
