Sri Aurobindo Studies in the English Department of Visva-Bharati

Dear Friends and Well-wishers,

Amazing news from West Bengal ! The English Department of Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan has been conducting courses on Sri Aurobindo Studies for the last five years with the initiatives of Professor Goutam Ghosal, Professor Debarati Bandyopadhyay, Professor Amrit Sen and others. Apart from teaching poems and prose works by Sri Aurobindo in BA and MA, the Department of English, Visva-Bharati, has introduced various psychological theories of Sri Aurobindo like Integral Psychology, Consciousness Approach to Literature and Overhead aesthetics. This, I believe, is unprecedented anywhere in India. Our thanks to all the faculty of the department, without whose co-operation it would not have been possible.

There is a wonderful students’ response and the local centre Sri Aurobindo Nilay has been ably supporting the enthusiasm of the students. Hardly did I imagine that Yearly Shakespeare, the official journal of Sri Aurobindo Study Centre, Nilay, Santiniketan, which has been running for the last fifteen years without an issue being dropped, was approved by the UGC last year, a great news for all the contributors. Visva-Bharati has always been a pioneer on many fields and this too is a remarkable contribution to knowledge. Hats off to its English Department now led by Professor Amrit Sen.

With warm regards,
