Dear Friends,
Born as Lawrence Marshal Pinto (24 April 1907—7 December 2001), Udar — renamed by Sri Aurobindo in April 1938 — had his early education at St. Mary’s School at Hubli in Karnataka. Afterwards he studied at St. Joseph’s European and Anglo-Indian High School at Bangalore. Having completed his high school education, he joined the Karnatak College at Dharwar. Later, he went to Mumbai where he joined the Royal Institute of Science to study engineering. In 1929 he went to England where he spent four years and earned a degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the London University. However, upon his return to India, he found himself without a suitable job as there were no airplanes in India at that time. So he settled down at Pondicherry in 1935 and started an export business with a local French firm owned by Robert Gaebele which flourished quite well. On 6 February 1937 he married his ladylove Ethel Anne Lovegrove, better known as Mona, whom he had met in England a few years ago.
Many of Udar’s friends were associated with Sri Aurobindo Ashram although he himself was hardly interested in it. His friends would visit the Mother and tell Her tales of their visits to Udar’s house. The Mother had reportedly remarked: “That Pinto fellow is spoiling my children and I will catch him one day.” Years later, Udar would comment: “Finally, She did.”
On 15 August 1937, Udar and Mona had their first Darshan of Sri Aurobindo. The impact of the Darshan was such that Udar, who was then in his thirtieth year, decided to join Sri Aurobindo Ashram as an inmate. His wife Mona too followed him and joined the Ashram with their only daughter Gauri who was born in November 1937.
The Pintos have played an extremely pivotal role in shaping the present Sri Aurobindo Ashram. Udar had set up the Harpagon Workshop where the furniture of Golconde — which was managed by Mona — was prepared under his supervision. He also established the Smithy, Foundry, Carpentry, Fitter Shop, Machine Shop and Stone Polishing Section which were needed for the construction and maintenance of Golconde. Later, when the Playground and Sportsground were started, Harpagon also manufactured various sports equipments. When a centralized Purchasing Department was started in the Ashram, Udar was put in charge of it. To him, the Mother had given the opportunity to design and make the furniture in Sri Aurobindo’s room. Under the Mother’s direction he started several other departments like the Handmade Paper Unit, Precast Concrete Works and the Laboratories Senteurs. He also developed the Coco Garden Cement Concrete Works and managed Honesty Engineers and Contractors. He played a significant role in setting up the New Horizon Sugar Mills. On 7 December 1971, the Mother appointed him as one of Her secretaries.
As our humble homage to Udar Pinto, the great Karmayogi, three hundred and thirty photographs of his taken with the Mother on various occasions have been published in the website of Overman Foundation. Many of these photographs have been published for the very first time.
With warm regards,
Anurag Banerjee
